Off-Meta cEDH: Jace, Multiverse Architect and 5 more spicy decks that crushed it

Welcome back to our weekly look at the cEDH fringe, where the commanders barely register on the meta pie chart and still find their way to the top of the standings. This week's batch is a good reminder that you don't need a household-name commander to win. Jace, Multiverse Architect took first place out of 53 at [SÁB | 15:30] Precon Clash - Foiled!, despite making up just 0.2% of the meta. Dack Fayden, Helping Hand did the same at La CASTanyada cEDH | La Competència, winning a field of 52 at 0.5% of the meta. Lumra, Bellow of the Woods completed the trio of event wins at Guardian Games PDX CEDH Halloween, taking first out of 32 while sitting at only 0.8%.

The 1st annual 1stCKMA cEDH Tournament (*100% PROXY FRIENDLY*, *GAEA'S CRADLE*, if the title is to be believed) was the real off-meta playground, with three of our picks in a field of 105. Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu finished 8th at 0.6% of the meta, The Wandering Minstrel took 5th at 0.4%, and Trazyn the Infinite grabbed 14th while rounding down to a perfect 0.0% of the meta.

This list plays as a white-and-colorless artifact stax deck, and Dack Fayden is barely involved. It opens with a heavy mana package: Sol Ring, Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, Mox Opal, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, Lion's Eye Diamond and Ancient Tomb. It uses that mana to land taxing or restrictive permanents like Trinisphere, Chalice of the Void, Rule of Law, Deafening Silence, Damping Sphere and The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. Silence, Orim's Chant, Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile let it protect its development or break an opposing combo turn.

The win condition is not clearly defined, and no combo was detected. The most likely route is slow combat damage once opponents are constrained. Urza's Saga constructs, Preston, the Vanisher and Tezzeret, Cruel Captain are the candidates. Boonweaver Giant can fetch an Aura like Eldrazi Conscription onto a creature for a large trampling threat.

This is a green land-ramp deck built around Lumra, Bellow of the Woods. It gets ahead on mana with Amulet of Vigor, Exploration, Burgeoning, Tiller Engine, Lotus Cobra, Gaea's Cradle and fast artifacts like Sol Ring and Mana Vault. Tutors such as Green Sun's Zenith, Chord of Calling, Natural Order and Crop Rotation find the right piece. Utility lands like Wasteland, Strip Mine and Boseiju, plus hate pieces like Null Rod, Trinisphere and Grafdigger's Cage, let it disrupt opponents while it builds.

The most likely win is a huge board of lands and oversized creatures, such as Lumra, Ashaya and Famished Worldsire, ending in combat damage or a Scapeshift-powered Field of the Dead. Food Chain is flagged as a combo, but I can't confidently name a specific infinite loop from this list, so the exact finish is not clear.

This deck is a reanimator and cheat-into-play shell with a lot of free mana and interaction. It ramps with Moxen, Lotus Petal, Sol Ring and the hierarchs, digs with Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Gitaxian Probe and Frantic Search, then fills the graveyard with Entomb, Bazaar of Baghdad and Cabal Therapy. Reanimate, Animate Dead, Necromancy and Unburial Rites bring back a big threat, while Show and Tell, Sneak Attack, Eureka and Natural Order cheat one in from hand or library. Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation, Silence and Grand Abolisher protect the play.

The win condition isn't a clean, single combo. It most likely wins by landing something like Atraxa, Grand Unifier, Protean Hulk or Omniscience early and finishing with value, Goblin Bombardment damage, or combat. I can't point to one guaranteed kill line from the list alone.

This is a fast artifact-centric mana deck. It opens with Ancient Tomb, City of Traitors, Mishra's Workshop, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, Lotus Petal, and rituals like Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual to explode early. Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Necropotence, and The One Ring supply gas and consistency, while Opposition Agent, Orcish Bowmasters, and Chains of Mephistopheles add disruption against opposing tutors and draws. Entomb, Buried Alive, and Unmarked Grave suggest some graveyard play as well.

The win condition isn't entirely clear, and no deterministic infinite combo is evident. The most believable route is Krark-Clan Ironworks, which sacrifices the many artifacts for mana and fuels Walking Ballista, with Arcbound Ravager and Grinding Station also available to convert artifacts into value. That plan likely ends in a large Ballista, but how reliably it kills through blockers and interaction is uncertain from the list alone.
