Off-Meta cEDH: Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist & co and 5 more spicy decks that crushed it
This week's off-meta roundup proves that the cEDH metagame is never as settled as the tier lists suggest. Six commanders that barely register in the overall numbers each walked away with a first-place finish. Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist paired with Wernog, Rider's Chaplain won the 76-player CCS $20,000 cEDH Invitational Qualifier #5, even though the pairing makes up just 0.2% of the meta. Marneus Calgar took first of 45 at the Commander Invitational Qualifier at The Gathering Place, from a 0.8% share, which makes it the most-played deck on this week's list. Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu topped 39 players at Mario's Birthday Madness while sitting at only 0.5%.
The back half of the list is even rarer. Zur the Enchanter won the 36-player Duelos Honra - cEDH European Championship Invitational at 0.2% of the meta. Dargo, the Shipwrecker with Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker took DERPYPALOOZA II, also with 36 players, and Azami, Lady of Scrolls won the 34-player Olympic Commander Challenger Series 1k Vol 4 - 2026. Both of those decks round down to 0.0% of the meta. Whether you're hunting for a metagame edge or just want an excuse to brew something weird, these are the lists worth a closer look. Let's get into them.

Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist / Wernog, Rider's Chaplain
π Winner of 76 players at CCS $20,000 cEDH Invitational Qualifier #5 (October 24, 2026), piloted by BVickers (spaghetii) Β· record 4-0-3.
Only 46 decks in the last 90 days (0.2% of the meta, #69 most played).
Win conditions: Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation, Thassa's Oracle + Tainted Pact, Underworld Breach + Brain Freeze, Underworld Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond (detected from the list)
This is a fast, blue-black-red-white turbo deck built around free mana, cheap tutors and a thick stack of free interaction. Moxen, Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Mana Vault and Ancient Tomb power out early plays. Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Enlightened Tutor and Gamble find the pieces. Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation, Pact of Negation and Swan Song protect the win, while Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora and Smothering Tithe give value if the game slows down.
The most likely win is a single-turn combo. Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact into Thassa's Oracle empties the library and wins on the spot. The other line is Underworld Breach with Lion's Eye Diamond or Brain Freeze, where you cast spells from the graveyard until Brain Freeze finishes the job. How the commanders fit in isn't clear to me from the list alone.

Marneus Calgar
π Winner of 45 players at Commander Invitational Qualifier - The Gathering Place (October 24, 2026), piloted by Boomer [NCEDH] Β· record 3-0-3.
Only 170 decks in the last 90 days (0.8% of the meta, #24 most played).
Win conditions: Thassa's Oracle + Tainted Pact (detected from the list)
This is an Esper control-leaning shell built around cheap interaction and fast mana. Moxen, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Dark Ritual and Lotus Petal speed up the early turns. Force of Will, Force of Negation, Misdirection, Flusterstorm, Pact of Negation and Swan Song let the pilot protect a plan while holding mana open. Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, Esper Sentinel and Smothering Tithe tax opponents and generate resources, while Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Mystical Tutor and Enlightened Tutor dig for answers or the win.
The clearest win is Thassa's Oracle with Tainted Pact. In a singleton deck, Pact can exile the entire library, so Oracle resolves with an empty library and wins the game. The tutors and free spells keep that line backed up with counter magic. Beyond that, the list has no obvious second combo, and Monastery Mentor and other value creatures look like supporting pressure rather than a defined backup plan.

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu
π Winner of 39 players at Mario's Birthday Madness (October 25, 2026), piloted by Styrofoam Β· record 3-0-2.
Only 108 decks in the last 90 days (0.5% of the meta, #35 most played).
This is a mono-green elf and creature toolbox that wants to explode early. Cheap mana dorks like Llanowar Elves, Fyndhorn Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Birds of Paradise combine with Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Lotus Petal, and Chrome Mox for a fast start. Gaea's Cradle and Elvish Archdruid can then turn a wide board into a lot of mana. Green Sun's Zenith, Chord of Calling, Survival of the Fittest, Natural Order, Birthing Pod, and Eldritch Evolution let it find whatever the table demands. Collector Ouphe and Eternal Witness give some resilience and interaction.
The honest answer on the win condition is that nothing in the list is a clearly defined combo, and none was detected. The most likely route is a dominant board of mana creatures and large threats, converted through combat damage or an overwhelming Ashaya, Soul of the Wild, Natural Order, or Regal Force turn. It looks like a flexible value pile that wins by out-tempoing opponents rather than through one scripted kill.

Zur the Enchanter
π Winner of 36 players at Duelos Honra - cEDH European Championship Invitational (October 24, 2026), piloted by Navalhas Β· record 3-1-2.
Only 40 decks in the last 90 days (0.2% of the meta, #74 most played).
Win conditions: Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation, Thassa's Oracle + Tainted Pact, Ad Nauseam + Angel's Grace (detected from the list)
Zur the Enchanter is mostly a tutor engine here. The deck is Esper (white, blue, black) and runs a lot of fast mana, including Moxen, Signets, Lion's Eye Diamond, and Dark and Cabal Ritual. It leans on cheap interaction like Force of Will, Fierce Guardianship, Pact of Negation, and Silence, and it wants to resolve Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, or Smothering Tithe early. Enlightened Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, and Demonic Tutor, plus Necropotence, keep the deck moving while the counterspells protect the key turn.
The most direct win is a Thassa's Oracle finish. Demonic Consultation or Tainted Pact empties the library, then Oracle wins on the spot. Ad Nauseam with Angel's Grace is the second route, since Grace lets you survive at zero life while you draw the deck. The list doesn't show what finishes after Ad Nauseam, so I'd treat it as a setup for Oracle rather than a standalone kill.
